About the book

When the crown becomes a target,
courage learns another name.

Princess Anne has always known the road to the throne. She never imagined it would begin in disguise.

When Anne and her younger sister Sofie lose their beloved nanny, Linda, grief settles over the palace—and whispers of killers move through the kingdom. To keep the princesses safe, their parents send them far from court, dressed as peasants and bound for the village of Horrow.

There, royal lessons give way to muddy roads, unfamiliar chores, and friendships Anne never expected. As she learns the skills of an ordinary village life, she begins to discover a kind of strength no crown can bestow.

But danger has not forgotten Cavindele. To protect the people she loves, Anne must risk the road home—and face the Trials of the Throne.

Some trials are chosen. Others choose you.
